SENIOR CUP MATCHES.
UNITED v MIDLAND. The contest between the above teams was brought to a exclusion at Hagiey Park on Saturday, when the wicket provided proved in tirst-class order, and as a result the batsmen found run-getting an easy matter. At the commencement of the dayn play the Midland had lost four wicketa for 106 runs in their second venture, and they still required to make 84 to save a defeat by an innings, being 190 to the bad on the. first innings. Strange (22) and Macdonald (21), the not outs, soon got to work, and the total was advanced to 172 before the 'former was badly run out for a freely-hit 60. With a dozen runs added Barry, jun., was bowled off his pads, and Macdonald was taken at the -wicket for a serviceable 47. After 'this temporary breakdown Lawrence and Garrard became a&sociatedi, and for a couiole of hours the spectators were treated : to a bright. display of batting, during which the total was advanced to 571. When within sight of his century Lawrence was clean bowled by Vincent, and retired with a well-earned 90 against his name. With the dissolution of this partnership the end scon came, and the last two men being l dismissed for a single each, left Garrard to carry out his bat for a very fine innings of 93. - Considering the length of their outing the United fielding was good throughout, but the bowling calls for but little mention, although Vincent appealed to bother the batsmen somewhat towards the close of the innings.
Wanting 191 to win. the United begun their second venture with less than an hour until the call of time. A couple of wickets, quickly fell, but Weston and Hair then played out time without, further disaster, the match ending as above stated. .Scores: UNIXED. First Innings ... ••• — — 23S Seoosd Innings.
