THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

10 THB EDITOB OP THJ3 TOESS.. Sir, —I have read with considerable interest the report of your interview with Mr Gilbert Anderson, and am very glad to read that he is full of hope for the frozen meat trade, if conducted- on a better system. He remarks that "we have virtually only commenced to do the frozen meat trade." This is good hearing, but is an opinion that the writer thoroughly endorses. He again says, "That he would almost go so for as to'say that the, freezing companies, in the interests of the producers as a whole, should insist that shipments of meat should be sent to recognised agents, rather than allow small odd consignments being sent to spoil the market for the bulk of the goods." If I remember rightly, this is practically what a late Agricultural Conference recommended upon a resolution proposed by Mr Orbell, of Geraldine, and would, as far as Canterbury and Otago are concerned, have been one of the regulations for freezing now had ib not been for the opposition of Mr Waymouth, of the Belfast Freezing Company. I giv6;him credit for not understanding tlie damage he was doing the frozen meat trade-

About three months ago the Argentine mutton was selling at 2|d per lb, and New Zealand at 4d. When the last mail felt the former was about 3£d, and New*" Zealand at s|d and 4d per lb. Some may say this is occasioned by an. improvement in quality of Argentine sheep. This could not have been brought about in a fewmonths. No, sir, it is their method of conducting their business, and it is lamentable that a few interested persons should be allowed to stand in the way of a similar improvement in the value of our own sheep and lambs. I hope the Christchurch Meat Company -will make another move in the matter.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED.
