The occasion of presenting the sword of honour to 2kCa|or-General Baden-Powell ! produced a remarkable outburst of popular enthusiasm. A large company of colonials and the Agents-General were present-. Mr Chamberlain, who presided, said the tribute was a hew proof of the solidarity of the Anglo-Saxon race. The great colonies have now become powerful states/and some were great nations. They shared 1 otir hopes, objects, and sacrifices. , With a prescience he wished everybody in Great Britain had shared, they foresaw at the outset the greatness of the issue, realising that ft was a struggle in -which the Imperial existence of the race and. its supremacy were at stake. Had Great Britain: dallied, not listening to the appeal of her fellow-subjects, they would have lost South Africa and forfeited the respect of sister nations whose goodwill and esteem . it was the main object of statesmanship to maintain and strengthen.; We were not entitled nor did we wish to make a settlement rendering futile the sacrifice*' and sympathies of our kinsfolk and not securing to the fullest degree the object both had in catering the struggle. General Baden-Powell, in responding, ' modestly' and warmly accepted the honours which be shared equally with his' brave companions.
