CHILI AND THE ARGENTINE.
PREPARING FOR HOSTILITIES.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received October 29th, 9.29 a.m.) VALPARAISO, October 28. Chili is mobilising her army, and the Argentina is coaling and provisioning ncr fleet, as tbe result .of Chili occupying the Cordilleras * territory while the award of Great Britain is yet pending. The boundary contentions between Chili and the Argentine Republic are of long! standing, .and in 1896, at the request of the two Governments interested, the late Queen Victoria consented to act as arbitrator. The Chilian regular army annually authorised by Congress consists of 5000 men and 600 officers; and the navy consists of about twelve large and ten small ships of war. The army of the Argentine Republic consists of 10,906 men and 749 officers, in addition to the National Guard of about 400,000. The navy, according to latest available information, consists of nine armoured vessels, nine cruisers, eight gunboats, four' destroyers, three transports, and also twenty-six torpedo boats.
