The weather is again settled, and'the rivers at normal level. The machinery of the Orwell Creek Company's dredge is working well. It will be a month before «ho gets into proper work, as a deal of dead work will' have to be got through. ■ • ■ . -' ' t . The 'machinery 'for the "Watierson's Console Company's dredge, which, was long age completed, is now oeing sent up to the claim, and will be erected at once. The dredge should'be at work by the end of the year. *. . ; . The machinery is being .erected on the Callaghan's Creek Company's dredge, which will be in fuil swing in three months''time. The shareholders of the Waipuna Company last night decided k> sell the dredge, as a prelude to liquidation. A good many yet have faith in the claim, and declare that it has not yet got a fair trial, . - r The Old Diggings Company's* dredge suspended work at the end of the -week through »-breakage "to a steam pipe. She will.resume again to-morrow"." Ureat .Woodstock Ccmpany have commenced the erection of machinery. . "Tho-ilokoiaXompftny's dredge, with a ie.tuzn of 30oz 15dwt, is again in a good position,- and ,is likeiy to improve. Fair gold is showing on the Red Jacks Company's ■ dredge; ' ' ' The, Maori Gully Company's dredge is neaxing compietion v ■ '■ ty&x the Jfaraden No. 1 Company's dredge .has -%>t little or no gold, and right 1 on the spot where the bore hole was said to go 10 grains to fhe yard, the dredge has foutfd nothing, but mud and timber. It is not improbablp' that the dredge will be shut down this week. ' ... No progress is being, made with the Marsden No. S Company's dredge, and in , view of the foregoing,, I do not wonder cfoereat. The Cornwall Company's dredge, on the Eight Mile Creek, is being slowly proceeded vita: The, Maori Queen Company's dredge, should be at work again about the middle- of. November, and if the machinery is up to expectations the claim should go 40oz for the week. . - . - The Commissioners' Flat Company's.' pontoons will be finished in six weeks. The Sheliback Company's dredge- will be dredging in February. OTAGO NOTES. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS. 1, ) "DUNEDiii, October ,21. The total returns reported up to to-day from the Otago dredges amount to 1105oz, [ which is considerably below the average. It la accounted for by the stoppage of most of the Moiy t neux fleet, owing to the high river. It is significant, however, that tite dry land, or, at all events, the flat. dredges, as differing from the river dredges, were responsible for nearly half this amount. The debentures in the Central Electric Com' pany have all been subscribed for. ThetJendigo and the Gold Deposit Companies' dredges are closed down on account of the river for the summer. Everything is working well on the Enterprise No. 2 dredge. The Smith's Creek and Bannockburn Company has gone into liquidation.

THE TEEIsD OF UNIONISM.

TO THE EDITOR OT THE PRESS. Sir, —Will, the Trades Union officers be good enough to drop for* a moment their abuse of Mr Booth (a gentleman with whom *I have no acquaintance), and. tell mc plainly whether they are willing that I and others who don't.want to. join their Union, should sell our labour in the best market and at the best price. we can obtain? And if we are quite satisfied with the price offered, will the Union officers tell us why we should have to consult them before selling? If one of these officers had a horse to sell, would he not claim the right to sell it in the best market, and at the price he considered fair? And if a dealer offered him £20 for his horse, and he was willing to part with it for that figure, would he not consider it a piece of impertinence for any man, or any number of, men, to say, "You shan't sell your horse except at the price that we think proper*?" ■ , I have not a horse to sell, bufcT have my labour, why should he interfere with my selling that? It appears to mc • barefaced and high-handed tyranny. Trade Unionists have a perfect "right to fix the terms-on which they will self' their own labour, but they have no right to interfere with mc in selling mine,—Yours, etc., NOT A UNIONIST. .
