THE VISIT OF GENERAL SIR HECTOR MACDONALD.
The Directors of the Canterbury Caledonian Society held a meeting on Saturday evening, the V .tsiclent {...r .fat Campbell) being in the chair, to consider what steps the society should , take in receiving their j distinguished fellow-countryman. Tba ■ secretary read letters lie had received from the Invereargiil and Otago Societies in reply to enquiries • from tnis Society. It was decided (1) that the President should despatch a telegram to the General at the Bluff on Monday welcoming him to NewZealand on behalf of Canterbury Caledonians; (2) that the President and four Vice-Presidents be a. .■ Sub-Committee to make arrangements for meeting him on, his arrival at tie Christ church railway station; J (3) that thi Society hold a public convsrsa- : zione in the Canterbury Hall, when a formal address will be presented, along with a small memento. The conversazione was decided upon instead of any smaller i gathering so as- to enable any of the : general public \rho may desire to join iv ,to do po/.and'so make the gathering as representative as possible. It is intended that,- the'.- proceeds should be expended in Christmas .comforts for Sew Zealand soldiers-* still at. the front, and no doubt the public will give willing •support not only with th's~ view of doing honour to the visitor bat in assisting the fund. The other Caledonian 'Societies in Canterbury have been communicated with, and Kaiapoi has already signified-its willingness to cooperate in doing honour to the General. l . — ■
