The American Tobacco Trust is spending immense sums, in making gifts to English retailers. The heads of the rival British combination promise the retailers a share of their profits. CRITICISING THE COMMONWEALTH FLAG. Admiral Dβ Horsey, in a letter to "The Times," agrees with Admiral Sir Lambton Loraine's statement that the British flag is good enough for the whole Empire. He adds that any other flag, no matter how emblematic, must be inferior to that of the Empire, and also opposed to that absolute, equality of the flag, desired by both the Motherland and the Commonwealth. £TAFF OFFICER FOR OUR NEW COMMANDANT. Captain C, L. Campbell, of the 16th Lancers, has been appointed to the staff of Major-General Babington, wbo has just accepted the position of Commandant of the New Zealand Forces. The American Consul, finding that Miss Stone's captors were the tools of the late Macedonian Committee, refuses to pay tbe ransom demanded, and insists upon the Bulgarian Government arresting thfe instigators, ANOTHER ANARCHIST PUNISHED. NEW YORK, October 18. <Haurer, en Anarchist editor of Berlin, New Hampshire, has been sentenced to four months , imprisonment for justifying Czolgoez's shooting of Mr McKinley. A NEW BATTLESHIP. (Received October 20th, 5.8 p.m.) . LONDON, October 19. The Devonport dockyard authorities ijave been instructed to build a battleship 425 feet length, of 16,500 tons -displacement. JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS. Sir A. L. Smith, Master of the Rolls, baa resigned, and is succeeded by Sir Ricjkrd Henn Collins, one of the Lords Justices. Sir J. C. Mathew, of the Queen's Bench Division, succeeds Sir Richard Collins.
