ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.

TO THB EDITOR OF THiTpiBES!* ' Sir, —The fact that Lytteltori is the final port of departure for the Discovery' affords Chnstchurch an opportunity to ;proye that we are able -to appreciate "the spirit ol adventure and 'scientific investigation which prtwnpte the expedition. Captain Scott, his. colleagues, officers, and crew should v be> tendered a royal welcome , and .a flwwoughly British send-off. Modern conditions are not such as afford scope for the exercise •of the adventurous spirit which won undying' fame for Columbus, Cook, Tasman, aid other explorers. Antarctica remains ' .for the endurance and courage of present.day explorers to conquer. Apart from tie" charm surrounding adventure, apart from the probable scientific value of this expedition's -work, there taa% result commercial advantages which must i& reaped by this colony owing to its nearness to the Antarctic Continent, I trust that, your appeal to the citizens to do what should be a high honour as well as a pleasure will succeed. Let Captain Scott and those brave men who risk their lives with him feel that the Britain of the South their courage and wishes them God-speed and a safe return. —Yours, etc., . - T. E. TAYLOR October 14th.
