WEST COAST NOTES.

(SPECIAL TO "TEB PBSSS.") ' GiOEniOC'lH, October 2. j The Red Jacks Company's dredge had a trial j run on Saturday, and will start next week, but 'it will be well on to the end of a mouiii ere the machine gets'into thorough working order. The pontoons of the Maori Gully Company's dredge was completed to-day, and the work of erecting the machinery commences to-morrow. The dredge should be working in six > weeks' ; time. ■ ■ . ■' 1 Ihe Shellback Company commence the ex- ■' cavation of a dam shortly. They are having ; Bom* trouble with the Chinamen who are now working on;their (the Shellback Company's) ground, and getting good gold. An injunction was taken out to-day against them, j At a meeting of the local shareholders in the Grey River Consolidated Company, it was agreed to ask the Ounedin directors to send over an expert to measure up what amount of ground has been dredged, and the amount of gold obtained. The opinion here is that the aredge should be doing a great deal more work, \ aud that rich, returns should ere now have been

forthcoming. j _ The i'ord's Creek Company's dredge is worki ing in 32ft of wash, which is beyond the capa- ! city of the ladder for efficient work. Nevertheless, she is doing fairly well, and is heading for the creek, the wesh slowly shallowing with coarser gold showing. The local director anti-

cipates a steady increase in the yield of gold. | There ate no improvements in the prospects of the Perry's JReward Company's dredge. The i ■wash, is still proving extremely light, and alt though - dredging is only being carried on to a ',depth of 10ft, little prepress is"being made. There ia something approaching a mild boom on the West Coast with regard to sluicing claims. The Waiwhero Company has been in full swing for months past, and the Montgomery's Terrace has also been floated, and the preparatory work is being pushed on. The other day was recorded the successful floating in Auckland of the Nine Mile Sluicing Company. To-day a. property, consisting of 100 acres, on Darkies Terrace, North .tfeaoh, has been placed in Auckland ,and a syndicate intend proceeding with, opening and development at once. Harris's ground, between WestI brook and Greenstone, is also in course of floI tation. This is one of the best investments on the West Coast, with the exception, perhaps, of the Republic Hydraulic Sluicing Company's ! ground at HejJey's G-ully, wfiich is reckoned the best sluicing drift. DUN!BJ>IN, October 2. At a meeting of the Tucker Flat Company the chairman said the purpose of the meet- ! ing was to consider the question of winding !up the company voluntarily. This course 1 would unquestionably have to be adopted, ' but, owing to the fact of the books and minute-Dook being still retained by the Goldfields Committee in Wellington, he • thought it advisable to adjourn the meeting till these ( documents were available. He understood -j the vendors intended to make no claim upon. j the shareholders whatever. It was resolved that the meeting be adjourned* until November 4th, and, further, that the secretary be in- •' struoted to write to Mr W. It. Cook, one of the vendors, asking him to forward an assurance in writing that no claim would be' mode by any other, vendor-interested.
