The annual musical and elocution contesta .between members of the Band of Hope . in the. Kaiapoi district concluded a* K.aiapoi on Friday; the prize takers were:— Tor piano; solos, Mies J. Gulliver, Rangiora, 1; blisses V. Featberstone and E. Has* aall fcqual) 2. Singing, Mr H. W. Kogew, Bangiora 1; class A,, Mies E. Barrows L Recitations, class B Jr Miss V. Wafcsott, Southbrook, 1; class d Mr K. Brown, Kaiapoi, li class. IX, Mies L. Rogers, 1; j&»« N. Walker 2. Beading, Misa O. Rogers 1. Great interest was taken in the competition, A service o! song wee given in the Oust Presbyterian Church on Sunday night, under the % direction,; of Mr SeareU* in aid of the clioxr fuade.. There, was 'a good congregation. A concert, in connection with the Dim* iandel public school was held in,the hall on-.Friday night, when the following took pttrb in the programme;—itissea. Lill, Withell (3), Houfand, T«lbot, Irvine, Dawson, Mesdames Irvine, Templer, and Messrs Templet, T. „ Irvine, K. Vaughan, B. Withell, and T. LilL Several items were also given by the children attending the school. ... On Friday evening an entertainment woe given in aid of the Hororata Cricket Club pavilion. . The proceedings constated of songs by Mesdaniee Baker, Bealey; aad Jones, and Miss B. Cordy, and Meters Petersen, Kelson, Powell, and Ronaldson, and a recitation by Mr Gardiner, , The Masses Cordy daaoed a fan dance;; Hies Myra Cordy also danced an Irish jiff. Messrs Powell, Wilson, B. Thome, and Nelson played a lively farce. A tea meeting, held in the schoolroom, brought .the Lower High street Church anniversary services to a successful close on Thursday night. An adjournment was subsequently made to the church adjoining, when "a public meeting was held, Rev. R. J. Murray in.the choir. After the chairman's speech*, in which flic reviewed the work of fcbo previous year, the report and balance-tfheet were read by the treasurer, Mr E. H. Turner, and showed that the church, was at last free of debt. Revs. W. Bftutnbor and JT, W. Burton followed with i&ort addresses, and between the speeches, the ohoir sang several anthems. The annual tea meeting in connection with St. John's Presbyterian Church, Southbridge, was held in the Town Hall, on Thursday evening. The.tables Were under the management of 3Xrs Andrew and Mrs Robert McDraith, assisted by the Misses McHraith; Mrs Withers and Mrs Web-. eter, assisted by the Misses McGtute; Mrs J.. McMillan and Miss Ruddock, assisted by Misa West; Mrs Abbott and Mrs Craig, assisted by the Misses Abbott and Miss McMillan; Mrs Msurqoand end Miss dark, assisted by Miss Gates. In the evening on entertainment was held. The Bey. R/W. Jackson occupied the ob&ir. The church choir sang an anthem under the condnctorehip of Mr T. A. Gates, aad the following also contributed items:—Mrs Jackson *nd Mrs Askew, Mr Oppenbeim and Miss Barnett, and addressee were delivered by the Reve. Gffles, Jno. ilcKenzie, Riddle, and Grant.
