SYDENHAM.
The Bvden}i&m Borough Council met Jasb night, the Mayor,- Mr B, P. Majjiire, being in the chair. Messrs Baker Bros, wrote requesting the Council to take steps to cause all Sydenham residents to number their houses. The letter wae referred? to the Works Committee, with power to act. Mr H. W&gstaS. wrote asking fchs. Council to direct the removal of an iron building to a distance of ten feet from his house, or that a brick wall be placed between the two structures. Cr. Sim reported that the matter had already, been <Jealt with. In to. the secretary of the Sydenham and Addington Cricket Giub, it was decided to reply that tie Council could not alter its previous decision, by which the Club was required to pay £15 le>ss for the use of the ground on condition that the Council ,had the use of the plant and! material. - The secretary of • the Drainage Board wrote with regard to the deputation which waited on the Board at its last meeting, stating that the engineer be instructed to ascertain the length of piping required in .Jackson's Creek at Meredith street. Attention would be _ paid to the cleansing' of the gullies as might be found necessary. The letter waa received.
A "letter wae received fronvtibte City Town Clerk, stating that the Council had decided not to accede to tihe request of the Sydeniham Council that one of the City steam fire engines might bo permitted to attend fires in Sydenham until the water works .were completed. The letter was received. A notification was received from the District Railway Engineer, to the effect that it "had been decided to have a gong fixed at the Colombo street railway cross-
Sag. . ' ' . 'JShtt Works Committee, in their report, recommended that the Seiwyn County Council be asked to asphalt tihe flooring of Wilson's bridge to preserve the planking. The Committee also recommended that the Lincoln road be watered three days per •week during #he summer months when *. necessary if ft water carfc could be- foired for the purpose. Tie Committee recommended that the watering of the streets be started at 7 a.m. during the summer aumthe. The Committee reccanmexwled that a by-law be made to prevent traction enginea damaging the streets. The report was adopted The Finance Committee reported that the receipts during' the last fortnight had been £285 2s 10d, wiule £227 8s lid was irecommended. for payment. TShe separate,, interest, and loan, accounts were together £5061 8s 5d in credit, while the general account was £4338 8s 4d in debit. The Committee recommended that the Commissioner of Taxes be requested to toko the Gospel 'Mission .property in Colombo street off-the valuation roll. Tihe report was adopted. . - . The Fire Prevention Committee reported that the Committee -has, by circular, invited tenders for supply of fire brigade- uniforms, and requested >paw«f to accent a tender. The Committee had made enquiries with & view to establishing a eystem of electric fire alarms, and proposed to engage an electrical engineer to prepare .mj, specification. The members of tab Fire Brigade thad been invited to elect its officers and make uirongements for starting the brigade. The brigade hod elected temporary officers, who would start training at once. The report was adopted.
