THE HEALTH Or LYTTELTON.
Wβ are very much disappointed to find thai some prompt and decided action was not taken By the Lyttelton Borough Council last night iii dealing with the Health Officer's report on the health of Lyttelton. It is sincerely to >a hoped that the reference to* the uaaitary Committee is not a prelude to the matter being burked altogether, but in any case the delay involved is sufficiently serious. It is well known that a highly unsatisfactory, not to say state of things has recently prevailed in the borough. _"lt is currently reported that there' have been no fewer than sixty cases of diphtheria and & serious epidemic of scarlet fever at the same time. In view of the alarmist rumours in circulation, £he Council at ite 'meeting last night ought not to Have bottled ap such an important qtteetion in committee. It ought to have aut&orised the publication of Br. Symee's report, for the information of, the public, suppressing the aamee of the individuals mentioned, and the Council ought to have taken prompt steps" to improve the health of the town. It is currently asserted that the noventilated state of the sewers ha* a good deal to do with the recent outbreak of,disease.; If that is so not a day ought t? be lost In attempting to put the matter right. W* hope the Sanitary Committee will give the subject their immediafca attention, and that a special meeting of the Council irill be called to authorise, any expenditure that may be necessary.
