WELCOME TO RETURNED TROOPER.
A "welcome home" social was held in the Templeton School on I_idsy in honour of the return of Corporal Peter A. Chaplin, of the Fifth Co_r_inge<_t. Mr Geo. Witty presided, and there were present, in addition to Corporal Chaplin, several of hie comrades in arms and officers of volunteer corps. Songs and recitations were contributed by Misses Sandford and Benjamin, and Messrs Sinclair, Burns, and Spicer. Miss Benjamin also played a pianoforte piece and accompanied. Several glees were also very nioeljr sung by members of St- Saviour's choir, under Mra William Bailey's oonductorship. At an interval short addresses of welcome were delivered by the oha-xoan and Messrs D. C. Burns, C*. Benjamin, G. P. Kissel, and D. Sinclair, and Mr Witty, on behalf of Ccsporal Chaplin's friends in the Templeton and _ru__rou__ding district, presented him with a handsome gold Maltese cross, suitably inscribed. Corporal Chaolin replied, and was followed by Besdand, who exhibited a number of curios from Africa, and explained their use.
The feature of the social tendered to returned troopers at D_rfk_ld on Friday night, at which Mr Robert Reed was chairman, was the pie-tentation of gold Maltese crosses, bearing suitable insenptions, to the following officers and troopers. —Captain D. Poison, D.5.0.; Lieutenant J. D. Manson, Sergeant flight, Clorporal Kaine, Troopers Rao, Berry, - Bull, a»i Hawkins. A gold brooch, with a suitable inscription, was presented to Mrs At____o_-on, mother of Trooper Atkinson, who lost has life at Paardeburg on April 29th. _as*_ During tbe evening songs were contributed by Misses Poison, Jameson, Brown (2). CABLE NEWS.
Pole, C. Mor*_a_d, and C. Cadogan. Speeches were given by Rev. Maxwell, Rev. Whitehead, Rev. Reader, Lieutenant J. Deans, and the Chairman. Miss Moffatt acted as accompanist, and filied the position admirably. At the View Hill Schoolroom on Thursday, there was & large gathering to welcome Trooper Simpson. Air Frank Fitch presided, and during the evening presented Trooper Simpson, on behalf of the residents, with a sporting gun. Trooper Maunsev was also presented by his old school friends with a travelling bag.
