The ordinary meetinc* of the General Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association wss, held yesterday. Mr Archer (president) was in the
chair. . , . T , The Chairman said that since their last meeting one of their ex-presidents. Mr S. f.arfnrth, had passed away, and he moved— "That a letter of condolence be .awarded to the late Mr Oarforth's family." The motion AA-as carried unanimously. The election of three members of committee to fill the vacancies existing was proceected with, and Messrs C. LeAvis. K. Chapman, and C. Dampier-Crossley were el.«ted. The Chairman said the Commit tee appointed to consider the ouestion of the dates of the Metropolitan Show had waited
on the President of the C.J.G. He h«d stated that the dates fixed by the Club for racing were Saturday, 2nd November, Monday, 4th ; Wednesday, 6t,h ; and Saturday. 9th. Dr. Levinge mentioned that Avhen in Dunedin, the President of the Dunedin A. and P. Association had told him that it Ava.s proposed to arrange "_ie days for the shoAvs throughout the South Island. Had the Dunediii Association communicated with the Canterbury Association ? The President replied in the negntiA*e. Mr Porvm. n moved—"That the Show be held on Thursday and Friday, 7th and Bth November." , The question of a two or three days show AA-as raised by seA-era.l members
Dr. Levinge though- that the Committee should carefully consider the question of a tAvo or three* days' show, and with this view he would nioA-e—"That the matter should be referred to a committee, consistinn- of Messrs J. Anderson, «T. Deans, and E. O G-. Staveley, to report, on the matter." This Avas seconded by Mr Macdonald.
Mr Hugonin moved—"That a three days' show be held."
Mr Murchison seconded the amendment. Dr. Levinge. after a short discussion, AvithdreAv his resolution.
After a considerable discussion, the amendment AA-as put, and lost by 9 to 7. The motion of Mr Peryman was then put and negath-ed on a show of hands. Mr J. Anderson moved —"That a Subcommittee, consiting of Messrs Macfarlane, Anderson, Staveley, Overton, Hugonin, and Deans, be appointed to consider the question of the exhibits to be represented at the three -days' show, and to report." Mr McMillan seconded the motion, and expressed the hope that he would live long enough to see a four days' show. Mr Macdonald moA-ed as an amendment —
"Tliat the Committee should be asked to report on the whole question of the advisableness of a two or three days* show, and what exhibits should be on the. ground, on any da A." Dr. Levinge seconded the amendment, which Avas agreed to. Mr M. Murphy, secretary of the NeAv Zealand Sheepbreeders' Association. Avrote, stating that at a meeting of the Council of New Zealand Sheepbreeders' Association, held in Dunedin, a letter Avas read from Mr Ruperfc Parry, complaining of the delay in forAvarding stock to the Cl-ristchurch Slioav I and Ram Fair, and stating that his sheep I were shunted on to a siding at Rolleston for two hours. The matter was brought under the notice of the A__*oci__on, with a hope , that a -change a. ould be effected. On the motion of Mr Staveley the letter was referred to the President, Vice-President, and Mr Deans, to interview the railway authorities on the subject. . Mr H. H. Secret-.n, secretary of the Agricultural and Industrial Hall, wrote, a.sking that the Committee Avould nominate one of its members as a director of the company. Mr E. G. Staveley was re-elected, as a director, representing the A. and P. Association on the Agricultural and Industrial Hall Company. Accounts to the amount of £104 9s 9d were passed for payment. Dr Levinge asked for an extension of tim. for the delegates to the Dunedin Winter ShoAV to bring up their report, and suggested that a special meeting of the Committee ! should be held to consider the report, and also Avhether a Winter ShoAV should be held or not in connection with the Association. It Avas resolved that a special meeting of the Committee be held on the morning of the next monthly meeting, to consider the questions referred to by Dr. Levinge. Two new member, were elected, mil the meeting adjourned.
