THE LATE MR CHRYSTALL.
If there is one class of the community more than another that will miss the late Mr W ChrystaH, >vho died on Friday night, it is tha yoiing men of Christehiircb, in whose social and general welfare he took the deepest interest. Ho w» always ready with kindly advice and assistance,, and at St Paul's "church fee conducted a class of between sixty and seventy young, men. Hβ was one of the most faithful supporters of the old Young Men* Christian Association in its troublous times, and not only always moH ready to find money out of his own pocket, but got the citizens to help too, and they assisted, knowing «» they did tea sterling character and that the object for which lie sought aid must be a worthy one Hβ was quite, recently taking, 'i lively interest in meetings connected with the new V.M.C.A., and in all matters connected with church work wae unlmng. As a business man he certainly took a front stand. An exceedingly hard worker, hefound time, to do much, of the routine work of his office, and his business was exDMidinE in all directions. Hβ had recently Kri% the control of all the kerosene imported into New Zealand, ami was the S£b importer of sugar in Canterbury, dome a flr«* towards encourag.ng the Wetland trade with tins colony Quite lately Mr Chrystall acmnred the Albert Bond; on the South belt, and when taken ill was arranging to make necessary additions to his stores to meet the demands of his business. He had be«n a member of the Chamber of Commerce since his arrival in Christchureh. . Notwithstanding his close application to and the numerous public duties he jHsoo£u» late Mr ChrUall yet found time to discuss social and public questions in the columns .of the daily Press, and letters above his signature were often seen. He was accustomed to take recreation in the form of long walks, and once made a ward trip to the top of Mount Herbert and back over Dyers Pass, doing the journey in one day. He was... not much of_a traveller, and seldom left Caniteg-btiiry. He was most devoted to .hie home life and fainilv circle, and did not care to be far from it. Speaking to an old and intimate friend of the deceased on Saturday, a "Press" representative was told:— "1 he main features of the late Mr Chvystall's character were his sound common-sense, his kindly courtesy, and his desire to do good." The late Mr Chrystall was a, director of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, and took iv very great deal of interest in the working oft.ha company. He occupied the chair at the last annual meeting of the com-i-mv liavihf bsen elected chairman of dii'ect«rs un the resignation of Mr Jolm (ings,. g r - c a somewhat remarkable fact that <toihg'the twenty odd years of the existence of
the company, it lost none of its directors by ' death till recently, -when it hud tli3 miefor----r tune, wirlii'i .1 very short tints, to lose two - ,7 of its prominent directors, viz., the labo Mr --," g Garforth. and the lat-o Mr W. ChryetaH. - At St. Paul's Church, ycsterd-is-, the B*v. .\ Dγ Elmslie made feeling pasting reference ; to the late Mr Clirvsta.il. It is intended to ._< hold a special memorial service next bun- ./;; day. , .. >*>■ The funeral will leave the late nstdenc* ' of Mr Chryatall at 2.45 p.m. to-day, for th» ./ Linwood Cemetery.
