GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.
(bt oub cx>hmekcial editob.; Friday Evening. ! There is nothing freah to report in the ; wheat market, there : being' little or none ,offering. There wiU probably not he much coming forward till the spring threshing begins. Advantage, however, may be taken of the lower freights now offering to consign parcels, as we -understand tliafc the - next direct steamer loading at Lyttelton will take wheat at 25s land oate «t*sos per ton. With this low rate of freight by steamer fresh engagements with sailers are not JikeW to be eiitered into at present, more especially as tha Home market is showing a weakening tendency - ° Tkz oats market is very firm, and prices have advanced 'about a penny smoe our last report was published. The Canterbury market is now above that of Southland and noitksm buyers are, therefore, likely to turn I in tnat direction for tliair requirements. ! There has b>en considerable activity of late at the Bluff in shipping oats for South Africa. 31essrs G. G. Stead and Co., and Fri&dlander Bros., who loaded the Romford, have now the Induna on the berth, at the Bluff, and she will oome on to Lyttelton to complete her cargo. For the same firms the Tugela is loading at Dunedin/ The Anglo-Australian is also loading oats at the Bluff for South Africa., and , Mes.«rs A. H. Turnbull and Co. are supolying part of the cargo for the Wingfield at'Timaru and the balance at Lyttelton. Enquiries have bten made regarding the chartsring of ths Tagus, which is bringing over the Fourth and Fifth Contingents from South Africa, but we understand it is not yet definitely settled i whether shs will bo engaged' to carry oats I or not. ,
■ :Th2 potato market has made another pronounced rise, and sales are now reported to ha.vo been made up to £5, at country stations. It is exp&ctcd thut a few will bs wanted for Melbourne by the next steamer, but. at present prices no fresh business can ba dona with Sydney, and any shipments now going to that market are of sales made forward some little time back. Onions are inclined to be easier, as few are wanted', and as tha smson is now far advanced only prim* iota will be taken.
