In opening proceedings Captain Drayton said that they regretted tliait the msse of their ord«riy-room had precluded the invitation of the* officers of al the corps. In addition to tba presentation of prizes they had also met to welcome bade Sargeant Collins fronr South Africa, whom all were glad to see amongst them aspun- During the evening songs were contributed by Major Day, Lieut. ''Wand, Colour-Sergeant Dougias, and bergt. ' Gse. ■ An excellent band, consisting of memI bers and ex-members of the corps, nlayed I eaveral selections, and violin solos by Messrs J §nowbatl and Jameson, Mr Webb riving a solo with the bones, and Messrs Taylor I Bros, a comet duet. Major Day, in reI sponding to the toast of the "Battalion Staff," congratulated the corps on its state of efficiency. Hβ also spoke of the goodfeeling which seemed to have grown up between the corps in the district, remarking that all seemed to realise more than ever since the war broke out that they were units of the whole, all under one flag. Sergeant Collins was presented with a gold sovereign case, inscribed: "To Sergeant Collins, Linwood Rifle rep. ab the War, 1900-1901." The recipient suitably: acknowledged the ?ift. Pt'zts were presented as under: — A Class: Private P. Jack Ist (marble clock); Private Cooper, 2nd (field-glass); ColourSereeant Douglas 3rd (lamp); Sergeant ■Sauire,'4th (field-glass). "B" Class: Private Lindsay,. Ist (ammunition and outfit case) ; Private Cook, 2nd (case d razors) ; Private T. Wade. 3rd (watch); Private .blaekett, 4th. (cigar case); Private Muir. sth (silver matdi-box) ; Private Treleaven, 6th (pouch). Marksmen's badges were also presented to: Colour-Sergeant Douglas, Sergeant Gee, Serjeant T-sylor, Lance-Corporal Cle.iand, taifcCPrivate Cooper and Jack. Cheers were giveri for Major Day ar.d the officers on ■their leaving the gathering.
Quartermaster-Sergeant Bachelor was yestEirday appointed Quart ermaster-Sergt. bf the Canterbury Battalion. Trooper CoiUns, of the Second Contingent, was - a corporal in the Linwood Rifles before going to the front. A vacancy occurring diuring diis absence, he was made a J sergeant of the corps on his return. i Captain Jmvton stated last night that the Linwood , Rifles want to obtain tne use of a portion of the Linwood Park to do some .pra-ebical Avork in the way of forming an entrenched camp during the coming sumOwinjr to transfer to the North Island. Private Blaekett, of the Linwood Rifles, has resigned from tfos corps. Hβ is one of the prize-winners at last season's shooting competitions.
