At a meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce, tine Finance-Committee brought up a report upon fche question of federation of the Chambers of Commerce Ihe report was to the effect that the Committee considered an organisation should be set up to affiliate all the Chambers throughout the colony. The Committee could act agree to any giving up of the Chamber's independence or individuality of action, suck as would be involved in affiliating under *he Companies' Act, 1882. They considered that all the central organisation required* was that the head office should be at Wellini'ton the secretary there to be paid an extra salary and to attend to the wants of the affiliated Chambers from time to time. The Committee also recommended there should be a president of the affiliated Chambers, and representatives from" Chambers should meet for discussion of business affairs annually all such meetings to be held alternately in Wellington, Auckland, Ghmtehnrch,. and Dunedin. The Committee recommended that the secretaiy should write to the Dunedin Chamber as to these proposals, and ask for theirs m exchange, so that out of the two the best might be evolved. The report was adopted.
WESTPORT, July 5. A well attended meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-night. The special business was the discussion of railway connection with Reef ton. A strong committee was formed, with instructions to seek the co-operation of Hokitika, Greyniouth, Reefton, and the local bodies. INVEROARGILL, July 6. \t the Police Court to-day William Rhind Origor Hay pleaded guilty to setting fire to a house in Orepuki in May last, with the object of securing the insurance (£75) on the furniture,-a considerable portion of whicj* had been removed. He pleaded guilty also to a charge of breaking and entering the Mfttaura Post Umce six years ago, removing the safe and stealing therefrom money, stomps, and other valuable*. The accused was sent to the Supreme Court for sentence.
