DESTRUCTIVE LARRIKINISM.
TO THB EDITOH OJF THE PKESS. Sir,—"May I ask if you will kindly allow mc to call attention through your paper to the wanton mischief which has been done ■by some malicious person or persons to the trees on the South belt, lately planted by the Christchurch Beautifying Association at considerable expense. The work which, has so far been put in hand was only completed on the 12th June, each tree being protected by a strong picket fence. Yesterday 1 inspected thie whole length from the East belt to the Lincoln ' road, and found about ninety trees damaged, eighty-four seriously; in some cases the trees hadi been pulled bodily out of the ground and one of the protecting panels "haui been removed.
Whilst on thijsf 4 subject I should, libe also bo refer'to the damage done to the trees and ehrubs in what is known as the Native Garden on the north side of the Avon between Madras and Manchester streets, which has b?en entirely under the control of Mr S. D. Barker, who is an enthusiast on native flora, and who has devoted a great deal of time and attention to the planting and laying out of this ground. You will hardly credit the statement that 150 trees and shrubs have been more or less damaged or destroyed during the last year, it is b?l!eved, "by boys in the neighbourhood or passing through. 1 think you will acknowledge that it is most disheartening to the Committee that the public, for whose benefit the work of beautifying the city has been undertaken, should show so little appreciation of their efforts. If you can in any way influence the public to protect their own property the Beautifying Association will be very greatly indebted to you. Apologising for troubling -you at this length.—Yours, etc., \ HENRY J. C. JEKYLL, Hon. Treasurer, Chrietchurch Beautifying Association. July 4th, 1901.
