In the course of his speech, the' Chiirmen of the oompany said it «w only, a month ex two ago that a gentleman who knew the country ■extremely welt considered that good gold dredgi ing ground could, be found in Rhodesia, and a i cpneesMon was obtained from tho British Sonth I Africa Company giving* them a monopoly for a limited time over the whole of the territory to locate gold dredging area*. ' The first step which they had takes had been to get over the best known expert (Mr Bawlioa) from New ileaund, where the gold dredging industry bad now become » commercial enterprise, *nd «ts worked on a large scale with very good resulte. This gentleman came over to Rhodesia, and made several trips into; likely, places wjth a view to locating gfouncF for them. 14r R*wlins had already succeeded in locating one or two good areas. From operations in NewZeaJands it was fonnd that lgr per ton would pay the «wt of treatment. - .Another speaker,, the managing director of the.company, said their monopoly waa for nine months, during which time they thought they would be able to get the expert from New Zee- j i*nd, and to locate and register a certain mom- ; ber of areas. The option would expire in another two months, but by that time he reckoned that the half-dozen expeditions which were under way in Rhodesia would have obtained an area aggregating ten square miles ! along the river, whioh would probably give j them something like forty miles in length. He belived six areas would be located. He might say that Mr Rawlins, the New Zealandauthority, had given his opinion that the ground, for instance, on the Mazoe River would be three times as rich as the beet dredging ground being worked in New Zealand, so that they would probably be in a position to ,pay very handsome dividends on the capital of the company which it was proposed to float for one or otbe* of the locations.
