ASHBURTON.
After the snow, followed by heavy rain, in Ashburton on Wednesday afternoon, there was a much heavier fall ot snow during the night, and a very stinging frost. The scene at daylight yesterday was very wintry, and the roads and footpaths were one hard sheet of ice and snow. There have been many accidents resulting from the slippery streets. Our Xshourton correspondent telegraphed last night: — 'Ashburton is bound in the cold grip of a. phenomenally hard frost, urnider a beautifully clear starlight sky. and those who are fond of skating can depend on good ice on the Domain lakes. The newly-formed skating club have been taking great pains to keep the surfaces clear 8i ob.tacles, and some very excellent skatiug is anticipated, as the Ashburton Domain waters are unique in annually affording genuine skating within a couple of chains of a railway station. In New' Zealand the fact of good solid ice being again available cannot be too widely known. There are three reaches of about a quarter of a mile long, and varying in width from one to three chains.
