SUPDEN DEATH. Mrs Mary Ann Rouse, aged 63, died suddenily at 5 a.m. yester_ay, at her home, near Oiunroer sq-uare. She had been ailing for some time previous, but no doctor had been called in: Mrs Rouse waa last seen alive by her -husband, who noticed that she was breathing very heavily, and ho immediately sent for Dr. Fox. ; Th« dootor arrived just after death, but, from his.knowledge oi the deceased, was able to give a certificate that she died from heart disease". At the inquest, wh'.ch was held before Mr H. W- Bishop, S.M., a verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence., that death was dve /to fatty 'degeneration oi the heart, hastened by congestion of the lungs. As Mr W. Hill., of Cha-riot, was crossing tbe Waiau rivejr with three liowea, the fore animal got into a soft place and fell. It was with the -greatest difficolty, says our Cheviot corr_-rpon_e_t, that _£r Hill succeeded hi extricating two of the horses; one was 'drowned. Mr Hill also had a very narrow escape c_ losing his own life. Another resident of Sp-tswood last week! wai carried down the stream, but succeeded in saving himself. Constable Luke _fa_Dt~tnell, who -has been ailing for some montb-J, died on Saturday. An adjourned enquiry regarding the death of Mary O'Dowd was resumed to-day. Dr. Lewis, who made a post mortem examination, gave it as his opinion that death was due to acute blood poisoning. The inquest will probably close'to-morrow.
