THE VISIT TO DUNEDIN.
A'FALSE ALARM.
(SPiOUIi TO "THE PBESS..") DUNEDIN, June 22. An official intimation was received ltttt evening by the Chairman of the Royal Commissioners and by the Mayor that the Royal-visit to Diinedin has 'been somewhat curtailed. The Duke will iseeive addresses from the public bodie* at 10.45 a.m. on Wednesday, instead of on Thursday morn-
ing. ■ l\he foundation stone of the Queen Victoria Memorial Statue will-be .-laid at 11 a.m, on Thursday, iiiter which ■'their Boyal High, nesses proceed to the railway station and leave by train for Christol*urch. The display to be made by the Government Departments in Dunedin does not appear likely to be of a nature calculated to excite intense admiration, and the telegraph office; winch almost marks the entrance into the eily by their Royal Highnesses after leaving the train, on it* upper windows, facing tli 3 Sine df route, will Juive a, number of tranxyarencies of the King, Queen, Duke, and Duchess, Imperial crowns, Ducal e-ro\ra," coats of arms, and. various mottoee. On the lower windows will ciea prepared by the telegranh officials, with it. number of prism lamps in front of ths building:. The fcpnbns to be presented by the .women of. Dunedin have greenntone tandles with gold crown tops, while the design on the inside of the present as a wfiole, handsomely mounted as it ja in an oaken case, gold mounted and lined with white satin, will form a most attractive gift
June 23.
The curtailment of the Royal visit caused the keenest disappointment, and led tothe abandonment of preparations for illuminaton of many private residences. The matter is, the principal subject of talk everywhere, and it is pointed oub that while in Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, and Wellington hours have been lost to keep to tbe stipulated programme, that at fianedn has bteh reduced by twelve hours at the last moment, reducing the stay prac-; tioally to one day and two nights.
On good authority we learn that there tvill bs no curtailment of this Dunedin projramma for the Royal visit.
