Shortly after lunch at Te Koraha yesterday her Royal Highness received Mrs | Arthur Rhodes," Mrs George Rhodes, and ( Mrs Wigram in the drawing-room for th? j purpose of receiving from them the .prmnt from,'the women of Canterbury to yousg Prince Edward, on his seventh birthday, "which occurred yesterday. The gift took the form of a icttei weight. The base is made from 18 eaiat polished gold, nnd is five inche-f King by thr<e inches wide, and has an hitif-inch -bevelled edge. On the" top" of the gold there is a small oblonc slab of poltahfd greenston?, encircled with a gold rope, and above this is the handle, which is in the form of a dog's head, made from New Zealand sp-etnstoe. Around tha neck of (he dog tnere is a collar made of 18-carat gold and studded with diamonds,, : 'Hi?'work' was eritntsted to .Messrs B. Petersen and Co.V The letter-weight, which was fitted/ into a silk-lined ciisej made from New Zealand wood, is a very handsome present. It is inscribed as follows:—"Presented to H.R.H. Prince Edward of Cornwall a«d York, by the women of Canterbury. June 23rd. 1901." The Duchess was evidently much pleased with the presentation, and acknowledged it graciously on behalf of the little Prince, her eldest son.
