ANOTHER ACCOUNT.
BY A LADY CORRESPONDENT.
When the Pilgrim Fathers mounted the Bridle path, and stood on the summit gazing down at the, baby beginnings of the future City of the i'iaine, little did they dream that *fter the lapse of half a century the infant settlement would have grown to such an extent that it was deemed worthy to find a place in the programme of the colonial tour of the heir to the Throne and his Consort.
The successors of those Pilgrim Fathers have risen to the occasion. Canterbury's son» have proved their loyalty on tie field of battle; on Saturday evening her daughters proved their loyalty in the drawingroom. Who could doubt this fact, who stood in Canterbury Hall on that evening, and gazed on the fair faces and exquisite costumes which thronged the brilliantlylighted coßoert hall, at the reception given by the Mayor of Cnristcburch (Mr A. E. Q, Rhodes) and Mrs Rhodes, to meet their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York.
The concert hall was converted for the nonce into a most tastefully designed drawing-room. The wails were draped from ceiling to floor with shades of terracotta, blue, brown, and green, intersperssd with panels of lace, which gave a light effect, most pleasing to the ey«. Frequent mirrors, artistically draped in harmonising tones of plush, reflected tlie various parts of the room, forming a vista of apparently endkss reception rooms. The numerous electric lights overhead were covered with large bell-shades of blue and red, which softened their effect agreeably, and looked very handsome. Graceful tree ferns were grouped about the room, and clusters of pot plants, dispersed here and there, formed an effective setting to the sombre colouring of the dresses. A duis was erected for the Royal, party at the left aide of <he upper end of the ball, two armchairs upholstered in blue in the centre being for the Duke and Duchess, the other chairs on the dais being for his Excellency the Governor, his Excellency the Admiral, Lady Ranfurly, tie ladies and gentlemen of the Royal suite, and the Mayor and Mayoress. In front of the dam a large space was left vacant, th-e remaining portion of the ha.ll being occupied by the assembled guests. The half was carpeted throughout, and couclhes and chairs here and there gave the gneste luxurious seats. The gallery, which, on first entering looked somewhat bare, was by nnd by transformed by the presence of many of the guests, who chose this coign of vantage, and with their evening gowns and sparkling jewels added a fresh picture to the scene.
The concert platform, with its handsome crimson plush curtaine, gave «. touch of warmth to the scene, which was most cheering to those coming in from the cold air of a winter night. The guests, obedient to the etiquette which requires early arrival at an entertainment honoured by the presence of Royalty, began to arrive , most punctually, and were all assembled by 9.30.
The Mayor and Mayoress stood at the entrance of the reception-room to receive their guests. The Mayor, in Court suit, wearing his insignia of office, and the. Mayoress, in a strikingly ihaadsome gown of jetted net over chiffon, with diamonds in front of her bodice, and wearing a beautiful diamond necklace, with diamond stars in h«r hair, received their guests with a courtesy and cordiality which made each guest at onoe feel welcome. Shortly after 10.30 the Royal party arrived, and were welcomed by the' Mayor and Mayoress. They entered the room to. the strains of the National Anthem, the company rising as they did co, and took tiheir places on the dais.
The concert at once began. Miss LaingMeason played a Polonaise by Chopin, executed with equal sympathy and .brilliancy. We may well be proud of this young lady, Canterbury born, whose talent has brought her bo deservedly to the fore. Sihe wore a becoming black gown of silk and chiffon. Mr Reeves followed with a song. "Lucia" (Luzzi). He sang with taste and feeling, and quite undaunted by the terrors of feeing Royalty, ®an.g his very best, which is very good indeed, and we felt proud of a performer who could give so much pleasure.
The Tiifcxt vocalist was Mrs Burns, who chose that gem, "Sing, Sweet Bird" (Qanz), and sung as she alone could eing _ it, in her cultured 'and-cultivated--style.' She wore black mobe velours, covered with jetted net, the long train-edged with sequin, a bond of violets on one shoulder, ar.d strap of passementerie on the other, forming the sleeves, the whole producing a beautiful effect. A violin solo "Zigetmerweisen" (Sarasate), by Mr F. 11. Wallace, accompanied by Mrs Wilding, was the next item on the programme, and a most delightful one it was to all true lovers of music. Mrs Wilding wore a handsome grey Liberty satin, trimmed with black, her corsage fastened with diamond . buckles. Miss Graham followed with the "Kong of the River" (Liddle). Her fine contralto voice was heard to great advantage in the hail, and she added another leaf to the colonial musical laurel wreath. Mies Graham was ajbtdred in white silk gown, with long train. Mr Millar brought the concert to a conclusion with his song, "The Admiral's Broom (Bevan). He was in magnificent voice, which was beard to great effect in so large a concert hall. Miss Katie Young was the accompanist to the vocal items, and proved herself a mast efficient one. Her dress was a simple one of white merveilleux, edged with chiffon ruebv ing over tucked frill, bands, and choux of black ribbon velvet on bodice.
At the conclusion of the conceit, the performers were presented to the J)uke and Duchess, who made gracious remarks on their performances. The Duke then made a tour of the room, tiho Duchess walking with the Mayor, followed by the Duke and Mayoress, and accompanied by the Governor and ladies of the Royal party. Th«y paused occasionally to address a few remarks to a guest, and then passed out of the door by which they ibad previously entered, and left for "Te Koraha." Amongst those presented to tie Duke was Colonel Robin, whom Prince Alexander of Teck recognised in. the assemblage, having known him in South Africa, and ' brought up to his Royal brother-in-kw. With the departure of the Royal party, the thoughts of the guests turned supperwards. Three rooms had been set apart for this purpose, a large one downstairs, which was speedily filled, the other two being upstairs. The larger one contained a number of small tables, the room prettily i decorated with a bank of pot plants and flowers at the far e&d, and specimen glasses of flowers on the tables. The smaller room opposite had one long table in the centre, to seat forty, smaller tables being set around, the mantelpiece was framed in' lycopodhvm. The rest of the floral decorations wbre carried out in shades of mauve, yellow, and whit*.
The guests eoou found their way upstairs, and every table was quickly occupied. The supper was on a magnificent scale, worthy of the hospitality of the merchant princes of London herself. Our host had risen to the occasion, and in his preparations had shown himself competent to maintain the honour of the city in se memorable an event as the visit of the Heir-Ap-parent and his Consort.
