FROM THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL CHAMBERS TO VICTORIA SQUARE.
Gloucester efcreet, along which the Royal procession was next to pass, was sumptupu% decorated for the occasion. Private effects on any large scale, indeed, wepe few in tjus direction, but the richness of the public colour display, and the numbers of smtaUsr flags which hung from various buildings proved quite sufficient to give an extremely good effect. Tha usual crowd clustered *bove verandahs and window niches, while the footpaths were pacfeed wjth people anxiously waiting the completion of the ceremonies inside the Provincial. Chamber. the street was guarded by volunteer pompanies, ranging from the bridge to Colombo street in the following order: Highlanders, jiieut. Grant; Rangitikei Rifles, Capt. Battern; Wanganui Rifles, Capt. Jjughes; PaUoerston Rifles, Capt, Mounsey; Manchester Rifles (Feilding), Capt Barltrop; Wanganui Guards, Capt Dwstjn; Foxton Rifles, Capt. Hunfces, and Palmerston North Guards, Capt Goldroghftm. Colombo street was ' lined , by the Rangiora Rifles, under Capt d'Auvergne, and the Ellesmere Rifles, under Acting-Capt. Burns. At half-past twelve a joyful peal rang out from the Cathedral buildings, and a few minutes after ihe Royal party issued from ths Provincial Chambers. Crowds upon crowds of people cheered them tumultuously. "You would have thought the very windows spake, , So many greedy look* of young and old, Through casements darted their desiring
eyes, Upon their visage."
As before, the procession had soon passed, and the look was not a long one. In a very few minutes the Royaljpair had passed'along both Gloucester and Colombo streets, bowing repeatedly to the acclamatione, and had reached Victoria Square.
