DUNEDIN, June 22.
Dr. Coughtrey has applied for a new trial in the libel action against the "Star , on the ground that the verdict of the jury was against the weight of evidence and perverse, and ac the defendant had failed to prove any facts on which the article was based. The only question for the jury was the amount of the damages plaintiff was entitled to recover.
The Queen's Statue Fund has now reached £1984.

The Manawatu A and P. Association ha« fixed the dateet of ita next show fpr November 13th, 14th. and 15th.
At a meeting of the North Island mem. bers of the Sheep Breeders' Association, held yesterday, the balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £260. The following Council was elected:—Messra J. W. Wheeler, J. Baker, J. J. Wilson, for Manawatu and West Coast; Messrs W. C. Buchanan, A. Matthews.- J. Stuckey, Wairarapa; Messrs P. McHardy, W. Birch, T- Croseey, Hawke's Bay. Tire Auckland A. andP. Association will elect one member for the Auckland district, and the Gieborne A. and P. Association elect one member for the Gisborne district.
GISBORNE, June 22. The scow Ngani, from Greymouth, with railway sleepers, had a rongih trip, occupying a fortnight. About 290 sleepers were washed overboard.
