FEDERAL MINISTERS' ALLOWANCES.
MELBOURNE, June 20. A long debate took place in the Federal House as to whether Ministers should take the £400 a year provided in the Constitution as an allowance, in addition to their salaries. It has been the custom in the States to forego the allowance when taking the salary, attached to the- office. By 30 to 22, it was agreed that Ministers should take the allowance. In the State elections five Ministerial and four Oppositionists have been returned unopposed, including Messrs John Norton, McCourt; and Lee. • THE LOSS OF THE FEDERAL. MELBOURNE, June 21. The enquiry into the loss of the Federal found that the vessel was well equipped in every particular, and that it was impossible to express an opinion as to .the cause of the disaster. THE QUESTION OF TATTERSALL'S ' SWEEPS. The Premier of Tasmania has protested against the Postal Bill interfering with the conduct of TattersaLTs sweeps through the post office as an infringement of the State rights of Tasmania. Mr Barton replied that the Federation had power to legislate in the direction of the proposal.
