MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS 7 &c.
The Royal Standard Lodge, No. 61, P.A.F.5.0.A., held their quarterly meeting on Moday . night, in the Methoddst Schoolroom, Selwyn street, Addington. The W.M., Bro. Bird, was in the chair. Bros. Dalley and Hanna gave a very interesting report of the proceedings of the Grand Lodge. A hearty vote of thanks wes acoorded them for the able manner in which they represented the Lodges. ' Receipts for the evening amounted to -340. The fortnightly meeting of the Woolston Young People's -Guild was held in the Woolston Methodist schoolroom, on Monday evening. The Rev. T. F. Jones occupied the chair. The following contributed items: —Mesdames Burns and Clarkson, Missea McConnel (2). Cocker, Wilkinson, _\Lirquet, Piper, Messrs McHarg, Wilkinson, Clarkson, Bensley, Rouse,* and McConnel. 'Miss McConnel and Mr McHarg played the accompaniments'. The Durham street Literary Society, on Monday evening, debated the question, "Is England's power, in danger of declining?" Mr Curletfc took the affirmative side, and Mr Burley the negative. The discussion which followed the opening remarks was vigorous and entertaining,'and on the question being put to tha vote, there was a small majority on the negative side. The Rev. W. Baumber presided. M_! H. G. Ell, M.H.R., gave an interesting address on Monday evening at tbe newlyorganised Band of Hope of the Church of Christ, Durham street. He referred in condemnatory terms to the drink traffic, and said that taxation end land legislation were by no means -the only matters c.-».at should engage the serious a.rention of stateemen. Tbe moral, as well as the physical well-being of our fellow-men was, he added, a tremendous question. The Dix Gaiety Company repeated their programme at the Opera Honse lart- night, when there was a capital house. All the items went excellently. To-night Mr Wallace King will make his last appearance. The Greymouth Cadets wil visit the Opera House to-night. The Bioscope Company repeated their entertaMrment at the Choral Hail, when there was a good attendance.
