PREPARATIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH.
ILLUMINATIONS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Humiliations Committee was .held yesterday afternoon, Messrs •F. - Graiham (chairman), J. Anderson, and Dr. Levinge being present. It was stated by the Chairman, that Mr R. Heaton Rhodes, M.H.R., had expressed l his willingness to light a bonfire which could be eeen from Mount Herbert.
•Mr J. 'U. Collins, of Christ's College, wrote stating; that he had been up the coast to Blenheim a few days ago, and had spoken to several runholders with regard to lighting beacons along the coast, during the trip of the Ophir from Wellington. The fcllowing had signified their readiness to light huge 'bonfires: —Messrs Weld (x'laxbourne), C. 'Murray (The Flags-), Tnomas (Tirohanga), E. Rutherford (Ktkerangu), J. W. Trolove (The Shades), J. Murray (Woodibank). Mr Collins further stated that he had no doubt bmt that Mr H. Mpllish (Clarence Bridge), the Maoris at the pah at Kaikoura, Mr F. Bulien, at the Point, Kaikoura, and others south of that station, would also fall in with the proposal.. If this were dene, there would be an unbroken line of fires from Cape Campbell to Banks' Peninsula.
Mr Collins, who was in attendance, was heartily thanked for his suggestion, and it w,is resolved, after discussion, to write to the gentlemen named by him, asking whether tii3y will fall in with this idea to light bonfire's ; and letters are also to be sent to the fo.l.owing:—Messrs E. Parsons (Wae-hdyke), Cr. Bulien (The Elms, Kaikoura), Goulter (Omilii, Kaikoura), J. Tait (Claverly), F. Monk (Conway), T. Young {Goose Bay. Kaikoura, the road overseer (Anniseed Creek). George Miller_ (Mangamauua), Robinson (Cheviot), Sir George Clifford (Stonyhurst), rLill (Motanau). the manager of Teviotdate, and Robert Chapman. Ths Mayor (Mr A. E. G. Khodes) was requested to telegraph, Mr John Holmes, at Rotorua, as ' follows-:—"It is proposed to Light bonfires along the coast from 'Cape Campbell to Lyt-tplton, when the Ophir is off toe coast. "Kindly telegraph the probable time Ophir will bs on" Cape Campbell."
