Alfred Jemnan, accountant to' the Kauri Timber Company, "was remanded to th« 12fch on a charge of embezzling £96, money belonging to the company. When arrested Jenman admitted embezzling altogether £1200. His frauds have extended over a long period. OBITUARY. (Received June 6th, 10.58 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 6. Dr. Garran, politician and journalist, is dead, aged 76. [The late Hon. Andrew Garran, M.L.C., LL.D., was bom in London oo Novembei 19th, 1825, and educated at a proprietary grammar school in Hackney, and afterwards at Spring Hill College, Birmingham. He subsequently graduated at London University, taking the M.A. degree in the philosophical branch in .3. He subsequently emigrated to Australia, and in 1851 he was engaged to write for a shortlived weekly newspaper called the "Austral Examiner." Dr. Garran was afterwards editor of the "South Australian Register," and later on editor-in-chief of the "Sydney Morning Herald," which position he vacated owing ,to ill-health. In 1886 he was ap- £ Dinted by the late Sir H. Parkes to the egislative Council of New South Wales. Dr. Garran, amongst other literary work, edited "The Picturesque Atlas" in Australia, and from 1890 to 1891 j presided over the deliberations of the Royal Commission on labour questions.] DESTRUCTION OF NEW ZEALAND MAILS. MELBOURNE, June 6. The report of the fire on the R.M.S. Oruba shows that one bag of mails for Wellington, and one for Christchurch, were badly damaged, while one- bag for Dunedin was slightly damaged. All contained newspapers, a«nd there is no mention of any damage to letters. The fire is supposed to have been caused during fumigation.
