POLICE COURT.

MISCELLANEOUS. At Lyttelton yesterday, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., Richard" Anthony Fleming, remanded from Christcliurch for medical treatment, was discharged. John Hyland, Harry Smith*, and "Hugh Riley -were charged with travelling from Wellington by the Tarawera without paying their fares. " Tl»ey promised to pay the money by Saturday night. and were fined 5s ewh. " ILLEGAL SALE OP LIQUOR. Mary Ann Christophersnn was charged that on May 11th she sold whiskey to one Mitchell. Sbe '.pleaded "Giilty." To a further charge of selling beer to*A. A. Mitchetl she pleaded "Not guilty/ Mr Byrne appeared for the defendant. Inspector Ellison, who prosecuted, withdrew the second charge. He said that the defendant lived at Little Akaloa. The men supplied were constables. On tho premises being searched two empty demijohns were found and a small quantity of whiskey. Mr Byrne informed the Bench that the defendant kept an accommodation house. In the beginning of April a man came to her and said he was a runaway sailor, and was very hardup. She kept him for some days and gave him drink, as he said he was cold. After the man left; be returned with another man •whom she understood to be another runaway Bailor. She gave this man food, etc. They had drinks and fhrew down a shilling, which she took without, much thought, and so wa», technically, guilty of sctling drink. Mr Byrne called Mr George Laurenson, who deposed that he had known Mr and Mrs Christopherson for years. They were very decent, straight people, and witness had never heard a hint of their selling grog. The Bench cautioned the defendant and fined her £5 and costs. The liquor found was to be forfeited. ALLEGED ASSAULT. « James Vidulick (Mr Mills) v Arthur WilVmxua (Mr Beswick). liiis was an action for assault. The evidence for the complainant was to the effect that his soft had been assaulted by-Arthur Williams, the defendant, on April 20th. The boy assaulted had been laid up (for three weeks. The defendant jftvft evidence absolutely denying that he bad assaulted young Williamson the date named. This" waa corroborated by boys. The information was dismissed with x»sts.
