CANTER BURY COLLEGE.

MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVER NOUS.

At the ordinary meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, held yesterday, there were present Mr T. S. Weston (chairman), his Lordship Bishop Julius, Canon Harper, Dr.-Chilton, Hon. W. H. ■Montgomery, and Messrs R. Westenra, T. Hu'crhes, Cβ. Howard, G. W. .Russell, M.H.R., H. J. Beswick, T. S. Foster, W. Chrystall, and T. W. Adams. Dr. Nedwill sent in his resignation as a member of the Board. He wrote as follows:—"As there may be some misapprehension as to the cause of my resignation of the membership of the Bonrdi of Governors I trust you will allow mc to state the reasons which forced mc to resign. The College Committee recommended Mr Blunt, for the vacant professorship, and a special meeting of the Board was called to fill the appointment. The Agent-General urged that 'lie should be 'informed at once as to the Board's choice, so that the candidates he 'had selected might not be prejudiced by unnecessary delay. The Board, in face of this request, postponed the consideration of the appointment till its nest ordinary

meeting so as to , permit of the discussion of a motion,- notioe of which was given, to appoint a lecturer instead of n. professor. It seemed to mc that the Board should not liave i-esitatcd for a moment to keep faith with tie English applicants, tihe Agent-, General and its own students, but should have there and then appointed him iv professor. I was further induced to resign because I thought the Board should liave resented an attempt made to prejudice Mr Blunt on, the ground that he was a gentleman, his /wife a well-connected lady, and because also he hail some private means. I was sorry to leave the Board, but- I could see no good in. remaining with such a decided minority in sympathy with my vierws."

Bing, 8.A., be appointed part-time teacher at the Girls* High School, at a salary at the rats oE £60 per annum; and that Mr H. O. The College and Finance and Estates Joint Committee recommended, with.respect to the offers received for providing boarding accommodation for pupils attending iihe Girls' High School, thut arrangement be made with Mrs E. F. Wilson; that the Lady Principal and Dr. Chilton inspect the premises jffoposed 'to be used by Jlrs Wilson, and: report as to their suitability and the numb&r they will accommodate; and that until tie number of pupils in residence reaches ten, Mrs Wilson be assisted to the amount of a sum not exceeding £50 for the first year.
