TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB.
(spEctAt to "the pr-ess.")
AUCKLAND, May 23. The Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting takes place to-day. It rained hard on Wednesday, but was brisrhi to-day, and looks fairly promisine. Tiki and The Trifler read best in the" Maiden Hurdles: Goitzer, Belfast, and Balbirnie in the Maiden Plate. Lena and Orange and Blue may encounter strong opposition from the best of the southern ponies. Heliades and St. Loanda, in the Pony R*ce. Lrctitia and St. Ursula have doi*e most solid work, and both are imieh fancied for the Birthday Handicap. Yolee is a l *) in request. The small course is against Formula, but she may take a lot of beating. There is an nncertainty as to what may start in the Hurdles, but Nor'-West and Tim are my fancies. In th* probable absence of the two top weights, Freewill and Sylvairus may prove the best in the Maiden Steeplechase. Hastings or Lady Avon may win the Royal Handicap, but Takapuna, the locally-trained •horse, is reported to be extremely well.
