LOG-CHOPPING CONTEST.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) * INVEP-CARGILL, May 2. A chopping match for £50 aside, and the championship of the colony, between H. Mitchell, the present holder, and J. Orouarke, took place yesterday afternoon. The conditions were tliat a 2ft red pine log was to be cut through in any style oi cutting. Both chose two slopes, and Orouarke won by about 20sec in the remarkably fast time of 4min lsec. A large amount changed hands in bets. The gate receipts wore handed to the Victoria Home for Friendless Girls. The winner, who has won many handicap events during his two years' residence in Southland, ' hails from Tasmania. Mitchell has the Australian reputation of having never previously been beaten in a match.
