PATRIOTIC MAORIS.
- In view of th.9 Royal visit the first official meetings of some of the Maori Land Councils under the Act of last session have been fixed for dates earlier than would otherwise have b-en decided upon. Our Wellington correspondent states that tho natives in some districts have taken up the movement with considerable enthusiasm. It has been •hinted to Councils that the first meetiiig might be marked by something in tba way of ceremony. One well-known chief seized the idea with great spirit. His people, with whom he is very popular, at once presented him with a kind oi chair of State. This will be used by him on the occasion of the inaugural meeting. The chief, however, thought he would also like a mace. As he did not possess one he actually wrote to Wellington n.nd asked whether tho mace used in the House of Representatives would be lent to him for the eventful day. The public officer, to whom the request was preferred, had to tactfully reply that it would not be possible to acce'do to the request.
