THE WELLINGTON CONTEST.
'-.ROM A CORRESPONDENT.) WELLINGTON, April 16. The number of candidates far seats on the uty Council is large enough to give the -Wctors ample choice. Ths interest displayed by the electors so far is not very keen. Tina abolition of the wards is to soma extent responsible for this. Whilst it docs away with parochialinn it also does •**•_** with concentration, which avas a vahiab.t* feature of tho old system, and which compelled tho councillors'to Ik- alive* to the wants of their wards. It is not thought that general politics aviil enter into the election of councillors this year, whatever may nttjmen at future oonlt. ts. There may be an attempt to introduce politics into" the Miyorul election, but it is not likely to affect the chances of Mr Aitktn, the retiring Mayor, who conn's among his supporters for the highest civic position some SeddonU_ _bo uro prominent in mercantile circle. One municipal question on avhich there is a division 0 f opinion is the Miramar pvo-I-osaL Thews avho oppose- the purchase of the estate do *_ on t'tw, ground that the improvement of the witter Mjpplv. not to 'lientitn other s_ vic_. is .. matter of far greater Urgency.
