THE VACANT DEANERY OF CHRISTCHURCH.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Whether or no another Dean be appointed to Christohurch Cathedral it will be of interest to your readers to knoav that Synod has long since conferred all the authority of the office upon the Bishop; that is, the authority of the deaconal and episcopal offices has been merged into that of the Bishop, under a provision that should the Bishop elect to be his own Dean, the salary pertaining to the office from capitular eudoavments should bo applied to the maintenance of the Cathedral services, or to that of the fabric itself. The vacant post has, therefore, little to recommend it, exoept, indeed, a salary of from £500 to £600 a year, secured upon aax endowment. Most men would rather be the vicar of a fine parish, such as St. Michael's, with a free hand to work it their own way, than bathe Dean of the Cathedral without any such liberty, pace the pleasure of the Bishop. Possibly the vacancy of the office may cause Synod to reconsider its status and authority. If the post is to be virtually a titular honour it might wall remain unfilled till the Cathedral is completed.—Yours, etc., CATHEDRAL.
