SOUTH CANTERBURY HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The monthly mestir.-r of the South Canterbury Hospital p.y.d Charitable Aid Board was held at the Hospital. Timaxii. yesterday; present—Mr J. "Talbot (in ohair). Colonel Moore, Messrs F. R. <*iliiiigham, D. McLaren, nnd J. H. Dean. An anology for absence was received from Mr Hole. Tlie Chairman stated that tlie finances stood as follows:—Balance iru'baTvk and at Post Office. £1283 4s 3d;, payments that d-av. £353 13s 3d. leaving a balance of £937 lis. There would b? two other payment"? to be mad? before further contributions .would come An. Since last meeting Dr. Gabites ha 1 temporarily left the Hospital for South Africa. The Board had grantied Dr. Gab'ttes twelve' months' leave of absence and /Dr. Munro was now in charge.. Mrs Jowsey had asked leave to get away for a short period in order to meet Major j-Towsey. who was now returning. He knew of no objection to the application, and had granted it, presuming that the Board would approve of his action. M-6 Jowsey had not left yet, but would doi so shortly. With regard to the instruction of the Board in regard to chronic qas-es, which matter had been left to Dr. Gabites to deal with, it had not so far b2t-n attended to, the doctor not having had time to consult with the other doctors before he wont away. No doubt Dr. Munro would attend to the matter and get the information for.
The Qbairman then proceeded to give a resume df the work done by the Board during the past two years. The credit balance on April Ist, 1899, amounted to £1447 4s 9d; and on April Ist, 1900, £1823 10s 4d, an exc_«s of receiDts over expenditure of £-76 ss" 7d. Oa April Ist, 1901, the balance totalled £1281 lis Id, showing an excess of i-xpenditture over receipts of £531
j 19s 3d. The contributions from local bodies : in 1899-1900 amounted to £2928 6s 2d, ani in 1900-1901 to £2510 10s 3d. The i__parative cost of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid for tho years 1900-ISOI had b'm as follows.-—ln 1900. the Timaru Ho-s'mi d had cost £2604 19s 4d, and in ISOI it'll" i cost £2572 lis 7d; the Waimate H isr t ■! had cost £1132 18s 10d in 1900, and £'10:?0 8s in 1901. The Old Men's Home? '■;.d •.•_ t in 1900, £400 19a 3d, and in 1201. £ZH 12s Id; ch_*it_ble aid in 1900, £1711 <>< [ 6_; in 1901, £1800 5s 2d. The coniparafive total expenditure for years eryjin<-1900----1901 was: in I_X>, £6044 9s sd; in I£ol. £6046 Bs. The estimates of expenditure for : the year errding 1902 were as follow.'*.: — Timaru Hospital, £2733. against £2572 Is 7d expended last \-ear; Waimato Hospital, £854 15s 3d, against £1020 8s last year; chant-able „id, £2000. against £1800 _s 2d last year; Old Men's Home, £500, a.gain.st £384 12s Id last year. The tot_. estimate for the year, adding sundries to the above amounted to £6370 15s 3d. being £324 7s 3d over tha actual e*_pencbture of lust year. The following items were provided for in the 1902 estimate-*: —Provisions, £700; earthenware, £40; wines and spirits, £60----light and fuel, £290; drugs and instruments, £270; linen, drapery, and bedding, £100: furniture and repairs, £40; printing, stationery, etc., £35; repairs, paint* mg. etc., £130: avater rate.. £22: insurance. £16; members' expenses, £20; sundries £40; staff salaries, £970; total. £-r7d3, as against £2572 lis 7d last vea<r. On the receipt side, there avas shown, ijlh; rent-?, £8; .patient**' payments, £175; Government {-rant, £1577 10s; subsidy on same. £1867 10s.
The administration of charitable aid for the year 1901 cost, in the country district*. ,-,00(1. the total number of orders issued monthly were 490; the _-era_> monthly ntimbar of cases being 37, ;u*_ "the average number ol persons Using. 115. At tho store in innaru the total number of orders issued v.-e__y_were 13.1; tho average number of eases, £7; and the averjge number of persons 107. tha total co-t of stores* supplied being £300. At the Old Men's Home tha cost for the year of keeping _ > tho institution had been £384 12a _d ■ there had been recovered from pensions, £93 15s Id • the number of inmates wm 18: tho weeklycost, 8s 2d, reduced by refunds from pensions te> 6s l_d. Industrial Schools and ehildi*?u boarded out had cost the Board £594, inciuelmg a sum of £140 for rents, and £96 had been paid to Industrial Schools. It was decided to increase the secretary's salary to £190 a year, on the condition that he goes into the country visiting moru* Irequently. "
