INSTITUTE OF JOURNALISTS.

A meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists was held at "The Press" otlice on Saturday last. The President reported having further communicatea with the English Institute, formally accepting tiie terms of affiliation proposed by tlie latter. He submitted a circular, which was approved, to be sent to newspaper proprietors, placing before them the nature and aims of the Institute, and asking their co-operation, especially in the matter of appointments to their literary stalls. Mr W. H. Trijjgs tendered his resignation as treasurer, which, was accepted, and, on his motion. Mr W. li. Atack. "Canterbury Times," was elected to till the vacancy. On the motion of the President, seconded by Mr tiaunders, it was resolved—"That this Council, on behalf of the New Zealand Institute ut' Journalists, begs to offer its respectful and hearty congratulations to the Hon. Sir Robert Stout, late hon. counsel to the Institute, on bis appointment as Chief Justice of Xcw Zealand, and desires to place on record its high sense of the unvarying kindness with whic- his distinguished abilities were always placed ut the service of the Institute in his capacity as its honorary legal adviser." It was resolved, on the recommendation of the Dunedin branch, to get the Libel Bill again introduced into Parliament, and the president was requested to communicate with Mr Carncross, M.H.R.. cm the subject. It was also agreed to forward to Mr Chas. Wilson, the chairman of the Wellington branch, a letter of congratulation on his appointment to the position of Parliamentary librarian.
