CHURCH AND STAGE
TO THE EDITOR OF TIIE PRESS. Sir, —Whilst agreeing with much of your ; leading article in to-day's "Press," I do : not see how the clergy can consistently at- I tend or even countenance theatres so long i as a practice now so general continues. I ' allude to men dressing as women, and j women wearing men's clothing. According j to Deuteronomy "xxii., 5, "All that do so J are abomination to the Lord thy "God." ! In my opinion a man looks the fool he j must feel himself to be when dressed as a i woman, and a woman vulgarises and lowers ! herself when dressed as a man. Religion | apart, it is execrable taste, and it is hard ; to understand how it is consistent with manly or womanly dignity or self-respect j to do" it. But this is perhaps better than ; the extreme scarcity of apparel of any kind ; that sometimes obtains with actresses and ; dancers. —Yours, etc-, | REFORM. I February 6th. j
