CANTERBURY COLLEGE GOVERNORS.
A meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present Messrs H. R. Webb (Chairman). R, Westenra. W. H. Montgomery, T. S. Weston, T. W. Adams, G. W. Russell, M.H.R.. T. S. Foster, C. S. Howard, H. J. Beswick, W. Chrystall, J. L. Scott, T. Hughes, Canon Harper, Rev. Dr. Morley, and Dr. Nedwill. Apologies for absence were received from their Lordships Bishops Julius and Grimes, and the Hon. W. Montgomery. The instructions given to the Agent-Gene-ral in connection with the calling of applications for the chair of modern languages were read. It was decided to communicate by cable with the Agent-General asking him to personally interview the applicants and report on their suitability to the Board. Mr C. E. Bevan-Brown wrote stating that from personal observation he found the school in a sound condition, which he attributed to the tact, patience, and judgment of Mr Lawrence, who had been loyally assisted by all the masters. He had already conveyed to Mr Lawrence and the other masters his sincere thanks and appreciation of their services to the school, and their loyalty to himself during his absence, and he was pleased in renewing those expressions through the Board.
On the motion of Mr Weston, seconded b_* Mr Russell, it was agreed—"That the Board place on record its expression of appreciation of the care and ability shown by Mr Lawrence, the acting headmaster, in the management of the Boys' High School, during the Principal's absence in England, and of the loyalty of the several masters to Mr Lawrence.
The report of the College Committee was considered in Committee, and the recommenadtions contained therein were agreed to as follows:—That Mr James Right, M.A., be appointed lecturer in Politic-ai Econoni}- at Canterbury College for the current year, at a salary at the rate, of £50 per annum; and also lecturer in Constitutional History at a salary at the rate of £50 pei- annum. That Mr C. F. Salmond, M.A., be appointed lecturer in Mental Science for the current year at a salary at the rate of £50 per annum. That Mrs Sura G. Harvey be appointed teacher of Drawing at the Girls' High School, at a salary at the rate of £30 per annum. That Mrs Gardner ba appointed teacher of Cooking at tlie Girls' High School, at a salary at the rate of £30 per annum. That Miss Easterbrook be appointed teacher of Dress-cutting at the Girls' High School, at the same rate as hitherto. That Miss Mary Cook be appointed teacher of Swimming at the Girls' High. School for the current term, at a payment of 5h per class per week. The report of the Museum and Library Committee was considered in Committee, and the following recommendations made were 'agre_d to .-—That Mr Edward Thompson by appointed an assistant instructor in Geometry, Per*pective, Architectural Drawing, Elementary Drawing, etc., for three nd'hts ptr week at the school, at a salary a*"'the rate of £30 per annum. That applies tiens b_ invited for the position of student assistant at the School of Art, at a salary at th- rate of £25 per annum, and that the Committee be authorisi-d to make the appointment. That the" Committee be authorised to call for tender, lor the erection of a readinc; room, and also ior certain extensions to the Circulating Library. After transacting other business the Board adjourned.
