POLICE COURT.

DRUNKENNESS

Before Captain M'Clatchie and Mr W. E. Samuels, Justices of the Peace, Edward Crunch, John Black, and James Palmer, were each fined ss, or in default to be imprisoned for twenty-four hours, for having been found drunk; a male first offender, on a similar charge, was given the same alternative.

ONE WAY OF PAYING A DEBT.

Stephen Thomas Hamilton, who appeared to answer a charge of having, on the 2nd inst., behaved in Cashel street in a manner whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned, stated that opposite Ballantyne's he saw a young fellow he had given a loan to, and had asked him to oblige by returning the amount. Before he knew what was happening his debtor gave him a smack in the face. "I would have been a Hat to let a man hit ine in the face without returning it," iaid the accused, who staled ti_M he had then given his debtor "one, two." The evidence of the arresting constable dealt with the fact of blows having been exchanged. The Bench gave the accused the benefit cf tne doubt, and dismissed him. MAD WlfrT DRINK. John Denny, who, according to the evidence of Constables Hastie, Pratt, and Connel. had on Saturday night been mad with drink, using obs.ene language, and resisting tho police fo violently that it required six men to take, him to the lock-up, was fined 10s for being drunk and 20s fcr resisting the police. For using obscene language he was sent to gaol for twenty-four hours. CASES REiMANDED. Michael L. Hislop was charged with having, on the 2nd inst.. used obscene language in (Ja-liel street. On the application of Mr Donnelly, who appeared for the accused, he was remanded till Wednesday. Andraw Walker BremneT and James Parker, alias James Burns, charged with having, on January 31st, at Dunedin. stolen one macintosh coat, value £2 10s, the property of John Rogerson, were remanded to Dunedin.

•LYTTELTON.

At Lytteiton yesterday, before Mr W. Radcliffe. J.P., a first offender was fined ss, Charles Reusch was lined ss. and ordered to pay for a meal he had had but refused to pay for, and Albert Ritchie was fined ss. and ordered to pay the cost of mending a window he had broken. The charge in each case was drunkenness.
