THE MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TEIJEGRAMS.) WELLINGTON, February 1. The Governor has received the folloxving cable message from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, dated London, 31st:—"His Majesty th© King and Royal Family are deeply "touched by the universal sympathy of New Zealand in their great sorrow. I am commanded to request that you will express xvarm thanks of himself arid Royal Family to those who have sent messages." AUCKLAND, February 1. The Protestant Alliance sent a message to the Governor, asking him to convey the following to the Royal Family :—"Member;, of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society throughout the colony of New" Zejtland unite in this our unanimous expression of deepest sympathy with the Royal Family of Britain in their and our great loss by tbe death of our belovtd Queen, Victoria the Good. We also unite every one of us in here and noxv tendering to King Edward VII. our hearty loyalty as mir rightful Sovereign Lord of United Britain throughout the world." A portion of the Rpngiora Borough Council Chamber xvas draped in black in memory of her Majesty Queen Victoria when the Council met *m Friday evening. It was decided to forward a telegram to the Governor, expressing its regret at the death of the Queen, and of sympathy with the Royal Family.
Imme<lia't«ly after the opening of the meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council the- following resolution wan carried: —"That out of respect for her late Majesty Queen Victoria this meeting adjourn till Saturday next." The following resolution was passed by the Canterbury Masonic Lodge. 1048, E.C.", at its meeting" on Thursday night:—"That this Lodge places on record its deep sense of the loss sustained by the Empire in the death of our lamented and beloved Queen, and desires to express its gratitude to the Great Architect of the Universe for the manifold blessings bestowed upon tbe British people during her unprecedented!}' long and glorious rei< r n.''
