POLICE COURT.
INSOBRIETY. . A batch of six inebriates, including two females, was brought before Messrs N. K. Bowden and W. Ballinger. J.P.s, yesterday. Three were fined 10s each and costs, and the others 5s each. , A NEIGHBOUR'S QUARREL. M_ry McPhee, for whom __ Beatti-'ap-peared, applied that John Fgan ba bound over to keep the peace, on the ground that he was continually annoying her by using insulting language towards her, and accusing her of stealing his fowls and chickens, and of other things. Accused, asked to plead, said: "I never broke no__>eace." Asked more 3ternly whether he intended to plead guilty or not guilty, Egan replied "Not" guilty." .Airs McPhee. made a lengthy statement in support of her application, in the course of wliich Egan made excited denials of the charges, and had to be called to order. He remarked that "never a dirty word had ever come out of his mouth," but that he had merely accused Mrs McPhee cf being a babyfanner and of enticin_- his chickens away. As Mrs McPhee had called him and Ins wife "a couple of thieves," he thought it was "tit-for-tat." A lot of conflicting evidence was adduced, wliich did not throw much light on the charge. The Bench, amidst many interruptions, said -iat the charge was a serious one, and Egan would have to be careful. He had partly admitted the charge, but as the eviidence was exceedingly conflicting-, the case p-ould be dismissed. The Bench further warned both Egan and Mrs McPhee tliat they must not annoy each other, or any other person. No costs were allowed. DISOBEYING AN ORDER. John D. Walker, charged with failing to comply with,an order of the Court to provide for the maintenance of his wife, was remanded til!, to-morrow. DESERTING HIS SHTP. John Pvoss, a seaman of the Aotea, who had deserted, and been found on board the barque Mario, was sent to gaol for a month, to be put on board when the steamer sails. Mr J. T. Brice, J.P., was on the Bench.
