MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

A TROOPER IN TROUBLE. At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday before Mr 11. W. Bishop, S.M., a Canterbury member of the Sixth Contingent, William Chamberlain, was alleged by a young woman to have disobeyed a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child, and to have neglected to find a surety thut he would keep up the payments which he was ordered to do by Mr Beetham, who had fixed an alternative of three months' imprisonment. Mr Byrne, who appeared for the complainant, applied for a warrant for the arrest of the man. Mr Bishop senti'iiced Chamb*'ain to seven days' imprisonment for disobeying the maintenance order, and issued a warrant for three l'Hinths' imprisonment for neglecting to find the surety.
