The details of Colonel Colvilk's engagement with the Boers at VantonJershoek show that durinjj the march 'from' New Denmark to Valakfeagte seven hundred Boers attacked a baggage guard consisting of three hundred of tie Rifle Brigade and iiftv Standerton Police. Simultaneously three hundred Boers, charging the cavalry, constituting rear guard, forced them back, but the enemy fleti on seeing the bayonets of the rifleman -hidden in a hollow.

The British Battery did good execution. Colonel Colville had one killed and fifteen wounded.
