WELLINGTON. January 18. • The Colchester murder case is as puzzling as ever. In reply to a remark by the accused, Mr Haseiden, S.M., said: "It is quite possible there is a hand behind the scene yet, a 'hand the law would like to get hold of." Lillywhit* has been asked many questions about letters, documents, and notebooks found in his possession. It is a curious thing that many of the note books are second-hand ones. Liliywhite said in regard to some of them that he.bought th*m at auction: at any rate, they have entries by original owners, and than entries by the iccused. In reply to Mr Skerrett, his counsel. Liliywhite explained the references to individuals and piaces in a ssries of letters produced. His story, it will be remembnred, is that when at Tucoma, in Noith America, lie had a partner namsd Clark. One of the letters belore the Court is Iran Clark, who, at the-time of willing, seemed to ba -Iwikof cuniing to N-lw Zealand, and aditd whether catarrh w.ts prevalent here. Mr h'k-:;r?tt put the question: 'Ts there much ciUurli over there?"
"Oh. vi-s." was Lillywhite's reply, "a lot; that's whut gives them the American twang." Thai is a .samp c of the kind of ;u-id!s which he indulges in. His manner yesterday was as cool as could be expected.
