SLY GROG SELLING IN THE CLUTHA DISTRICT.
<« HEAVY PENALTIES INFLICTED. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TEW.GKASI.) DUNEDIN, January 18. The sly grog-selling cases are being heard before Mr-Stratford, at Balclutha. William Marshall pleaded guilty of having liquor for sale. The Crown Prosecutor said the enormity of ths illicit traffic was shown by the fact that during the raid eleven gallons of whiskey, two kegs containing fifteen gallons of beer, and four dozen bottles of beer were seized. The defendant was fined £40, in default a month's imprisonment.
John Mac Donald also pleaded guilty, and was fined £40 and costs. Similar fines were imposed on William Allan and Alexander Bain, James Vial, jun., George Vial, jun., and Andrew Richardson. The charge against Vial, sen., was withdrawn. In the second house raided the police seized nine bottles of gin, nine and a half gallons of whiskey, ten bottles of brandy, a case containing fifteen bottles of gin, ten gallons of beer, and thirty-four bottles of beer. All the defendants pleaded guilty. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") DUNEDIN, January 18. During the hearing of one of the sly-grog selling cases at Balelutha, the Magistrate, Mr Stratford, said that if the defendant, who was fined £40 in October last, had bsen charged .under the Act of 1881, instead of the Act of 1895, he would have imposed a penalty of £75. Altogether seven defendants "were each fined £40. Five who had been previously convicted were sentenced to ten days' imprisonment.
