THE PROPOSED BOROUGH OF RICCARTON.

DEPUTATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL.

A deputation, headed by Mr Shand, waited on the City Council last night, to object to the proposal to make Riccarton a new borough, and requested the Council's cooperation in tlefeating tlie scheme, with the view of fostering the idea of a "Greater Cliristchurch." Mr Humphries spoko strongly against the proposal to form the new borough. If anything were done, it should be in the direction of a Greater Christchurch. Mr Waymouth pointed out that much of the country between two populated patches was agricultural country; it would mean that another nail would be put in the coffin of the Greater Chiistch-arch proposals. In reply to Cr. Samuels, the Mayor said that if the area under discussion ever became a part of Christchurch. it did not necessarily mean that the Saleyards must be closed. Other r-entlenrcen spoke, and Mr Waymouth intimated that it was desired that the Christchurch City Council lot it go forth that It would oppose the formation of any other borough en its boundaries. The deputation then withdrew. After discussion it was moved by Cr. Gray, and seconded by Cr. Sorensen—"That the Council having already affirmed the desirability of a 'Greater Christchurch,' is of opinion that the multiplication of municipal holies in close proximity to the city would very probably tend to defeat the consummation of the idea of a 'Greater Christchurch.' " The motion was carried unanimously. A second resolution was moved by Cr. Sorensen, to the effect that the matter be brought under the notice of the Government, and lost on division.
